Fido’s Year In Review

January 15, 2022

Well, we’re officially in the new year! Over the next few weeks, you’ll likely be seeing lots of best-of lists for 2021. And no annual recap would be complete without Man’s Best Friend! In this post, a vet lists some top doggy highlights of 2021.

The Name Game

Covid-related dog names, as Fauci, Pfizer, and Zoom became quite popular in this year’s analysis of popular pet names. High-tech names, such as Google and Siri, are also gaining ground.

Stress

Do you hate background noise? So does your dog! University of California researchers found that common household noises, such as beeping microwaves , can be stressful for Fido. And the most upsetting are high frequency sounds, like smoke alarms. (We’re with you on that one, buddy.)

Fido Got A Stick Library

New Zealand saw lots of wagging tails in 2021. After noticing a dire lack of sticks, a man by the name of Andrew Taylor made a stick library for the local pups from branches he chopped off his own trees.

If The Slipper Fits

Senior dogs are so cute, and a Yorkie named Digger is a perfect example of this. After the pup’s owner passed away, he ended up in a shelter … along with an old slipper he simply refused to let go of. The pooch and the slipper were adopted together.

Fido Lost Whamageddon … On Purpose

A real survey of 1,000 pups was conducted by researchers in Britain. The goal? Identifying Fido’s favorite holiday tune. The winner: Wham’s love-it-or-hate-it hit Last Christmas, while second and third place went to Jingle Bells and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, respectively.

A Very Good Boy

Every year, there are some remarkable stories about dogs that go above and beyond to help their humans, sometimes even saving their lives. That’s certainly what happened with Henry, an 8-year- old Boston Terrier from Connecticut. This very good boy made his owners aware of the fact that their infant daughter was having difficulty breathing. No doubt, he’s credited with saving the baby’s life.

Mystery Solved

An interesting discovery in 2021 shed some light on dogs’ coat pattern genetics. A gene that produces very pale coats was discovered to be over two million years old. Scientists traced the gene back to a relative of the modern wolf, which is one of Fido’s now -extinct ancestors.
