Celebrating National Bird Day With Polly

May 1, 2023

May 4th is National Bird Day! Birds are truly amazing creatures. These little balls of fluff are smart, cheerful, affectionate, and curious … not to mention loads of fun. This is a great time to celebrate our feathered friends, and maybe pamper Polly a bit. A local Fort Myers, FL vet offers some advice on this below.

Toys

Birds need lots of toys, to keep from getting bored and unhappy. Variety is important here. Everyone gets tired of the same-old, same-old. Offer your winged pal many different types of playthings. Chew toys will help Polly keep her beak healthy, while preening toys offer comfort and mental stimulation. If your colorful buddy is a parrot, she’ll also appreciate climbing toys. Last but not least, foraging toys can  keep your little friend occupied. While there are plenty of great store-bought toys, you can also make your feathered pal’s things. Just stick with things that you know are safe.

Dance Party

Birds may be small, but their personalities certainly aren’t! Many of our winged friends love to dance, which is always cute to watch. Play Polly’s favorite song, and record her bopping around.

Presents

Pick up something new for your feathered buddy. Birds need a variety of perches, so a few new ones would be a good option. You can also give your tiny pal a new swing, or perhaps a birdbath or a new mirror.

Kids’ Projects

Do you have little ones? Have them get in on the fun by offering some bird-related crafts and activities. Making toys is a great option, but children may also enjoy drawing Polly, or perhaps writing a story or poem about her. You can also wind the night down with some bird-themed entertainment. Rio is a great family-friendly option There are also some wonderful documentaries. HBO’s Oscar-nominated All That Breathes is poignant and beautiful.

Help Her Family

Don’t forget about wild birds! Hang a birdbath or birdfeeder in your yard. Short on space? You may have room for a hummingbird feeder. Avoid the red syrups you find in stores: just use one part sugar to four parts water. You can also help by planting native shrubs and flowers that attract birds.
