7 Reasons To Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig

March 1, 2023

March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month! Guinea pigs may never be as popular as Fido and Fluffy, but they are super cute and fun little pets. If you’re ready to bring a new animal companion into your home, you may want to take a look at these little guys. A Fort Myers, FL vet lists some reasons to adopt a rescued Guinea pig in this article.

They’re Gentle

One benefit of having a Guinea pig is that they are quite timid and gentle. This is one reason they make such suitable children’s pets. These guys rarely bite. In fact, many of them are quite affectionate.

Wallet-Friendly

With inflation making the costs of everything skyrocket, budget is a huge factor for many. Guinea pigs are quite inexpensive. The most expensive pieces—your pet and his cage—are the main up-front costs. You’ll of course have to provide food, bedding, and hay, but these aren’t generally super pricey products. (Cavies also need chew toys, but you can make many of these out of ordinary household items.)

No Noise

Guinea pigs aren’t entirely quiet: they make some pretty charming sounds, such as wheeks, squeaks, and chirrups. However they aren’t very loud. You won’t have to worry about your pets waking your neighbors up at night!

No Training Required

These little guys can learn some simple and cute commands, such as Sit Up and Turn In Circles. You can even show them to jump through hoops or go into their cage on command. However, you don’t have to teach them anything: it’s up to you!

Short Commitment

When you adopt a dog or cat, you could be signing on for 15 years of pet care or even longer. Guinea pigs, however, only usually live about five to seven years.

Adorable Variety

Did you know that there are several breeds of Guinea pigs? These range from the longhaired Peruvian to the curly Texels and Alpacas. Guinea pigs also come in many colors, and can sport short or long fur.

They’re Cute

Last but not least, Guinea pigs are extremely adorable. You may be surprised at how charming they are. Actually, you should double the cute: cavies should always have at least one buddy, as otherwise they get lonely.
