Choosing the Right Collar for Your Dog

March 1, 2021

Have you recently adopted a new dog? One of the first things you’ll need to get for your companion is a great collar. Every dog needs a functioning collar, and it’s up to you to find the proper one. But how do you know what to choose? There are definitely a lot of options out there. Find out more about choosing the right collar for your canine companion below:

Why are collars important?

Your dog’s collar is important, first and foremost, for their safety. Collars allow a leash to attach to your dog. That gives you control over your pooch’s movements and prevents them from darting away from you; into the street or toward another pet, for example. Even well-trained dogs should wear a collar and leash while spending time outdoors, to be safe.

Keep in mind that the collar also gives a place to house your dog’s ID tags. That’s crucial for getting your pet returned to you in case they get lost or escape. Most vets recommend using ID tags and a microchip implant at the same time for the ultimate identification.

What kind of collar does my dog need?

There are various different collar types out there. Most common is the standard flat collar. It’s usually made of nylon, but could be made out of leather or other materials. And there are Martingale collars, otherwise known as limited-slip collars. They’re typically used on dogs with slender necks like Greyhounds and Whippets. Martingale collars tighten if your dog gets close to slipping out of their collar.

There are also training collars. They might be needed depending on your dog’s behavior correction needs. Examples include choke collars, prong collars, spray collars, shock collars, and more. Ask your veterinarian or a professional dog trainer before using a collar of this type on your canine friend.

What about sizing and fit?

Follow this rule of thumb: you should be able to fit two fingers between your dog’s collar and their neck. If you can’t, the collar is too tight! Remember that a collar that fits a puppy will be too small by the time they’ve grown into an adult dog. Always check the fit of your dog’s collar to make sure they’re completely comfortable.
