Your Aging Cat

October 1, 2020

Did you know that cats can become seniors as early as age 9? Fluffy will always be a kitten at heart, but as she ages she’ll slow down a bit, and will benefit from some extra TLC. Here, a Fort Myers, FL vet offers tips on helping your kitty age comfortably.

Beds

Senior cats are master nappers, capable of spending up to 20 hours a day snoozing. Make sure your drowsy feline has lots of comfy beds and napping spots to choose from.

Playtime

Take a few minutes a day to play with your feline pal. This will benefit Fluffy both mentally and physically. Plus, it’s cute! Don’t worry about overtiring your cute pet. If your kitty gets tired, she’ll just ‘quit’ the game.

Litterbox

Fluffy will likely appreciate a litterbox with low sides. This will be easier for her to get in and out of. If you have more than one floor in your home, put litterboxes on every level. That way, your furry friend won’t have to use the stairs as much.

Grooming

Older cats sometimes look a bit unkempt. This is because they sometimes get stiff and sore, and can’t groom their entire bodies. Help Fluffy out by brushing her regularly.

Safety

We recommend that all cats stay indoors. This goes double for senior kitties! Fluffy won’t be very quick or agile anymore, and she may not be able to escape dangers. Older cats are also more likely to forget the way home.

Food

Proper nutrition is crucial for pets of all ages. Feed Fluffy a good, senior-formula cat food. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard. You don’t want your furball becoming obese!

Veterinary Care

Your feline buddy will benefit from more frequent visits as she ages. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. During your appointments, ask for updated care tips, including signs of sickness to watch for.

Lights

Just like people, cats sometimes have trouble seeing at night. Putting a nightlight out for Fluffy will help her get around after dark.

Love

Last but not least, pay lots of attention to your kitty, and make sure that she feels loved. Senior cat purrs are truly precious! Just be very gentle when picking Fluffy up or putting her down.
