Choosing a Spot for Your Birdcage

Have you recently decided to adopt a pet bird? Good for you! Our feathered pals make very cute and charming animal companions. Polly will spend a lot of time in her cage, so it’s important to make sure that she feels safe and comfortable in it. Choosing the right place for your pet’s cage is also crucial! Heat

Polly can get very sick if she gets too hot or too cold. Don’t put your feathered buddy’s cage too close to a fan or air conditioner. Spots near heaters, fireplaces, and air ducts are also not good options.

Light

It’s fine if your colorful little pal gets some natural light, but you don’t want to put her cage in direct sunlight. This can make a birdcage much too hot in summer! That said, it is important to note that some birds, such as finches, do need sunlight to stay healthy. Ask your vet for specific information.

Air

Put your winged friend’s cage in a place with clean, high-quality air. Polly has very sensitive lungs, and can get very sick from breathing fumes that are harmless to us. Many types of modern cookware give off vapors that are toxic to birds. For that reason, the kitchen isn’t a good spot for your bird.

Companionship

Birds are very sociable, and don’t do well if they are isolated. Don’t put Polly all by herself in a back bedroom: she’ll soon start feeling sad, lonely, and depressed. Your bird will be happiest if she can see, hear, and interact with you. However, that doesn’t mean she’ll enjoy being in the center of everything. A living room or family room is often ideal.

Loudness

Loud noises can make our feathered friends quite nervous. Don’t put your little buddy too close to a stereo or TV, or in any areas that tend to get noisy.

Safety

Many birds are prey in the wild, so they’ve developed strong self-protection instincts. Polly may be happiest in a corner, where she is only exposed from one side.
