Social PETworking Month

June 1, 2023

June is Social PETworking Month. One would probably assume from the title that this is about helping Fluffy and Fido get more followers, but it’s actually aimed at helping homeless pets get adopted. That’s one cause that we are always happy to support! A local Fort Myers, FL vet offers some tips on how to get involved in this article.

How To Help

The basic premise  here is pretty simple: during the month of June, share posts about homeless pets that are up for adoption. You can share posts made by local rescues, or go online to find pictures and stories of adorable pets that are in need of loving homes. If you’re a photographer, you may also be able to help local shelters by volunteering to take pictures of their furry wards.

Get Others Involved

Social PETworking month centers on social media, so this is definitely something you can get friends and family members onboard with. Set a challenge to post one pet pic a day. You never know: you may change a sweet dog or cat’s life with just a few keystrokes.

Information

Sharing pics of pets is great, but it isn’t the only option. This is also a great time to share helpful information. These can be articles or infographics about adopting a pet, letting a new pet settle in, or tips and tricks for things like training and petproofing. Another thing that can help is sharing information about the harms done by puppy mills and other unscrupulous breeders.

Fido And Fluffy

You can also get your four-legged buddy in on the fun. Share some cute pics on social media! We do have a few tricks for taking great pet pics. One thing that can help is to get down to your furry buddy’s eye level, so you aren’t shooting the picture from above. Picking the right background is also important. If you’re going for an adorable ‘void kitty’ pic, then by all means, photograph Fluffy in a dark closet. Otherwise, choose an area that contrasts with her fur. You may also want to look into the different settings on your phone or camera. For instance, if you want a cute action shot of Fido chasing a squirrel, you’ll want a fast shutter speed.
